Campeche

Campeche is an ideal place to live an experience full of amazement and generosity. Since the sixteenth century this land of deep contrasts was the subject of fantastic stories in mouths of men avid of adventures and wealth; a traveler’s dream.

Within the limits of the territory of the state of Campeche was one part of the Mayan civilization, one of the most important cultures that populated the American Continent.

The Maya founded their villages that became ceremonial centers characterized by the existence of a priestly organization and the worship of the gods, highlighting sites like Calakmul (recently named “Cultural Heritage”), X’pujil, Chicanna, Becan, Anthill, Acalan, Jaina and Edzná among others. Later in 1942 the meeting of two cultures is marked with the discovery of America the concepts and structure of the Old World were transformed. During the colony, the port of Campeche highlighted as a point of liaison with the world, which allowed the economic boom and population growth; Campeche became the target of pirate attacks, privateers supported by the crowns of England, France and Holland, which devastated the entity.

Between 1610 and 1704 the building of the fortification of the port starts, but the bastions and ramparts were completed until 1769. An important attraction of Campeche is its cuisine: result of the merger of Mayan, Spanish and Caribbean cuisines being so unique for its presentation, aroma and flavor that grabs the senses. Currently the geographical environment of Campeche includes continental and insular lands, rivers, lakes and seas, including an extension of 56,126 km2.

The city of Campeche is the state capital and it is here where lies the most beautiful testimonies of the colonial state, its historic downtown named: “Cultural Heritage”. There is nothing like walking through the historic monumental area, walk its sidewalks arranged and clean for its cobbled streets on a hidden urban infrastructure, without ads or signs covering their balconies, doors and windows, admire the patios and arches of the colonial houses and eat some delicious regional dish in any central restaurant, admiring the colonial architecture of our state.
